Good practice guidelines
nextstep/IAG libraries can contain leaflets,
booklets, books, videos, posters and software, which come
from many different sources. This section takes you through
how to obtain the information you want, suggested materials
(free and priced) in order to help you build a relevant and
useful library, and make best use of the financial resources
available to you.
Good practice
As a general rule, resources held in IAG libraries should
be:
• accurate • current • unbiased
Accuracy
The materials in your library should be up-to-date
and come from a reputable source such as:
• Government publications
• well-established publisher
• professional bodies
The above mentioned sources of information
are likely to be accurate.
Currency
Materials should generally not be more than
2 years old
An exception to this is course information
(e.g. adult, further or higher education prospectuses), which
is produced annually or more frequently - ensure you use the
most recent edition.
Further exceptions are career development and occupational
area handbooks. Most recent publications can be 6 or 7 years
old, but if no new edition has been published, these will
normally be accepted as current.
Beware of fast-moving areas such as IT.
There may be other items in your library that are more than
2 years old but contain useful information, which cannot be
found elsewhere. These items should have a warning label clearly
displayed on the cover.
Sample labels are available in the 'Downloads'
area.

Bias
Materials need to be checked to ensure they
avoid bias. For example, if a leaflet on the childcare sector
implies that only female entrants are suitable, it should
not be displayed on the grounds that males are equally entitled
to enter this type of work.
Some commonly recognised form of discrimination:
• age • racial or cultural origin
• religion • sexuality • weight •
disability • gender
The library should aim to positively discourage prejudice.
